Calcaneal osteotomy- screw question
I am 5 weeks post surgery for PTTD and calcaneal osteotomy and in my 3rd cast so far. I get #4 next week. Recovery seems to be ok-still NWB of course and the crutches suck...but you all know what that is like.
My question is about the screws they put in my heel. I was surprised when i got cast #1 off after week 1, that I had 2 long screws protruding out of the bottom my heel. I had assumed that they were internal only. My surgeon said he used to do them internal only but found that about 80% of people needed to have them removed eventually as they bothered them so he does them this way now. He expects to remove them between week 9 and week 11. I asked how, and he said he uses a drill (puts it in reverse I guess) and removes them. At that point I would may go into an air cast rather than a fibreglass cast. Obviously, because of these screws I am NWB while they are in...9-11 weeks. I'm not sure if I get to begin some weight right after they come out or if I need to wait a little longer. I'll ask next week.
Has anyone had their screws sticking out of their foot? One sticks out about an inch but the other is a good 2 inches long. He said when he removes them, the bone will fill in on it's own eventually, like a broken bone would.
