How to clean musty smelling yarn?
I was given some really nice yarn from my MIL that belonged to her mother. It had been sitting for many years and now smells very musty. I started making a scarf for MIL, knowing she would really appreciate the fact that the yarn came from her mother. I planned to hand wash it or dry clean it once completed. However, the the mustiness gives me a bad headache whenever I work on it. I suspect mold, although the yarn looks & feels like new. One yarn is a Noro brand silk, mohair, lamb's wool mix. The other is a Berrocco brand nylon, wool, acrylic mix. I plan to leave it outside as much as I can to air it out. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to how to save this project? I won't be able to finish knitting it like this and fear I may just have to throw it out.
